When you are driving your CPU with adobe after effects and you need more speed for rendering and ray traced by graphics card then upgrade your graphics card with compatible Ray traced supported model. If GPU is unsupported then some advance feature of adobe after effects missing  or did not work properly in to your projects,(for example-Shadow,Blur, Ray trace). Gpu of Nvidia minimum at last 512 mb with supported model and latest may have depend on your budget or work essential. 3D work demand a powerful GPU(Graphics processing unit), Ram, Processor, Faster hard disk, Cache size and speed, Chipset on motherboard.
 GPU option not work if your graphics card is non compatible for ray-tracing, You can not use ray trace features like this diagram picture show there is no GPU option in after effect.

Here are name of compatibly GPU brand of Nvidia for adobe after effects and premier pro.
